Meet Sheri Task, M.D. –
Hayward Office, Obstetrics/Gynecology
Sheri Task always wanted to become a veterinarian while growing up. It wasn’t until her senior year of high school during a human anatomy class that her fascination with the human body trumped her interest in taking care of animals.
“I think the complexity and workings of the human body are amazing. That class in my senior year left an impression and I realized that I wanted to pursue a degree in medicine,” said Dr. Task.
After completing her undergraduate degree in zoology at San Diego State University, Dr. Task started medical school at University of California, Irvine. While going through her clinical rotations and being exposed to many different specialties, she decided that obstetrics and gynecology was her calling.
“I knew I wanted to pursue a specialty with a surgical focus. When I experienced obstetrics and gynecology and had the privilege of delivering babies, I realized that this specialty encompasses all aspects of medicine, including surgery. It is a specialty with lots of variety. Even after 15 years of practice, I still feel like I learn or do something different everyday.”
After completing her residency at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara, Dr. Task joined Bay Valley Medical Group in 1996. She enjoys seeing patients and their families from both the local community and from the medical group staff. Taking care of many staff members is one of the unique and wonderful benefits of working at Bay Valley.
In addition, Dr. Task appreciates the way Bay Valley Medical Group is organized. “I like the combination of having control over my practice but with the administrative support that Bay Valley provides,” said Dr. Task. “Everyone is respectful of each other and treats each other like family--making it a very comfortable work environment.”
Dr. Task strives to provide her patients with both accurate information and peace of mind as they make difficult decisions. Her area of practice deals with women at every stage of life, which is challenging but extremely rewarding. “ I care for patients in all phases of life-from teenagers to individuals of advanced age,” says Dr. Task. “I try to help them feel comfortable with whatever we are confronting as a patient/doctor team and I do my best to help them improve their quality of life.”
Dr. Task strongly advocates for patients making their own decisions. “My role is not to make a decision for them, but to provide them with the information they need to make their own best decision.“
Some of the best perks of Dr. Task’s job occur outside of the office. “Every time I run into a patient in the mall or supermarket with their children who I delivered it’s a really amazing feeling,” says Dr. Task. “ Sometimes the kids are taller than me and their moms always remember being in the delivery room. It is amazing to know I was part of the start of their life together.”
In addition to her practice, Sheri Task serves on the board of directors of Bay Valley Medical Group. She was the first recipient of Bay Valley’s Ira G. Davidoff Leadership Development Program and has contributed greatly to the medical group’s success.
Outside of Bay Valley, Dr. Task is the president of the non-profit, Women in Medicine. The organization focuses on providing members with continuing medical education and mentorship as they enter the medical field. She is also the secretary and treasurer of the medical staff at St. Rose Hospital in Hayward, CA.
In her spare time, Dr. Task spends much time with her two children, Zachary, 13, and Sydney, 11, and their three dogs.
