Meet Rama Polisetty, M.D. –
Hayward Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Rama Polisetty was born and raised on the south-east coast of India in Andhra Pradesh, India’s fourth largest state by area and fifth largest by population. Her father was a veterinarian and her mother was a homemaker. She had an active childhood playing tennis and badminton for her school. Dr. Polisetty was also class president and spoke publicly at several community events on behalf of the student body. Her activities during the school year included volunteering at local medical clinics and in the summers she helped her physician uncle at his own clinic.
When it became time to identify a career path, she gravitated towards medicine. She enjoyed interacting with and helping people and observed the personal impact her uncle had on people. Additionally, her older brother had become an otolaryngologist (ENT) and she found this motivating.
Dr. Polisetty attended Andhra Medical School, the eighth oldest medical school in India, which was established in 1902. She became very interested in surgery, but also wanted the opportunity to have a more longstanding relationship with her patients, something she couldn’t have as a surgeon. Dr. Polisetty then discovered obstetrics and gynecology and found it to be the perfect balance to meet her goals. Dr. Polisetty recalls, “Three doctors stand out in my memory as major sources of inspiration and influence. The first was Dr. Louis Weinstein, a renowned perinatologist and chairman at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He inspired her with his dedication to education and to obstetrics and gynecology in general. Dr. Spencer-Smith, with his amazing skills as a surgeon, helped lay the foundation to her skills as a surgeon. The third was Dr. Gnaneshwar, who had a special way of interacting with his patients. I remember watching him diagnose and treat his patients very thoroughly, but also communicate with them in a way that was simple and understandable.”
Dr. Polisetty met her husband, a technology business owner and entrepreneur, in India. They were married and in 2000 moved to the United States, where his company is headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Upon completion of her residency training, she began searching for a practice and found Bay Valley Medical Group to be the ideal setting. “I knew I didn’t want to own and manage my own practice, because I didn’t become a physician to worry about the administrative side of health care. I wanted to help my patients in an environment where I could focus on medicine and also have some latitude to tailor my practice to suit some of my personal preferences. Bay Valley Medical Group fit perfectly with my vision,” said Dr. Polisetty.
When not practicing medicine, Dr. Polisetty devotes time to her family and friends. She returns to India almost every year and enjoys traveling to Los Angeles and Portland. Dr. Polisetty has two children, a son who is almost three and a daughter who is one. “I love spending time with my children and watching them grow. But it also takes constant supervision – currently, my son is teaching my one-year-old how to jump on the bed! Our family dynamic is a unique one. My husband has a more flexible work schedule than I do, so if we’re in a bind trying to attend to work and home responsibilities, he generally can step in and take care of the children when these situations arise. I feel very blessed to have such a loving and supportive partner, two beautiful children and a thriving career.”
