Meet Krishna Misra, M.D. –
Hayward Office, Radiology
The choice to become a physician was clear to Dr. Krishna Misra from a young age. Growing up in Orissa, India, her grandfather was the county doctor, traveling to his patients’ homes, assisting them without any of the advancements of modern medicine that we use today. While home from boarding school on breaks, Dr. Misra would accompany him as he treated his patients throughout the area.
“What struck me was his ability to diagnose patients without the technology we have available to us now, he simply relied on his training and his extensive knowledge of symptoms,” recalled Dr. Misra. “He was a well-respected doctor who helped so many people, and I wanted to be just like him.”
Dr. Misra’s direction in medical school diverged from traditional internal medicine when she discovered and learned about a then-new technology, the CT scan. “I wasn’t fully exposed to radiology at the beginning of school, and first thought of pursuing ophthalmology,” said Dr. Misra. “However, when I began working with ultrasounds, CT scans, and x-rays I found it fascinating, and I became interested in how diagnostic imaging could enhance patient care.”
After completing her residency both in India and later in New York at the Harlem Hospital, Dr. Misra joined Bay Valley Medical Group in 1993. “I love it here. Bay Valley is like a second home to me,” said Dr. Misra. “We have a very family-oriented environment, where everyone looks out for each other. We are able to provide our patients with great care because services can be rendered under one roof.”
During her 30 years as a physician, Dr. Misra has seen the technology in radiology rapidly improve, enabling her to better diagnose patients. “In 1983, when I was just starting residency, it took 90 seconds to do one slice of a CT scan. Now it takes 90 seconds to do an entire scan,” said Dr. Misra. When asked what her grandfather would think of being able to take an internal picture of the body she laughed, saying, “He wouldn’t believe it.”
Dr. Misra considers one of the benefits of her job as being able to take an extra step and show patients exactly what is going on with the use of mammograms and ultrasounds. She explained, “With tools like these, I am able to explain to patients what is going on -- good or bad-- and in conjunction with their physicians can steer them on the correct path to resolving the issue.”
“What I like best about my job is the variety of things that I get to do and that I am exposed to,” said Dr. Misra. “I’m always seeing something different and someone different. I work with all age groups, from 5 months to 90 years old, and each patient has his or her own respective challenges.”
When not working, Dr. Misra enjoys cooking, traveling internationally, painting, and reading. She is married to a local urologist with his own private practice. They have two children: a son who is following in his parents’ footsteps and is currently attending medical school at Pennsylvania State University, and a daughter with a passion for international issues who will graduate from high school this year.
