Pleasanton Office, Family Medicine Physician

Anupama Velpuri, M.D. grew up in a family environment where developing a passion for medicine was inevitable. Dr. Velpuri’s father was a young man when he survived a deadly disease that took the life of his grandfather and several other members of his family. This experience spurred a strong interest in medicine, which he passed on to his young daughter, Anu. He motivated his family to be educated about their health and created the foundation and inspiration for Dr. Velpuri to become a doctor.

Dr. Velpuri attended medical school at Kaktiya Medical College in Warangal, India. During medical school, she was greatly influenced by an ob/gyn physician, who also became her mentor. “I learned a lot from her,“ said Dr. Velpuri, “particularly doing away with the mindset that the goal of an education is to learn information and pass a test. Instead, she taught me that learning was a journey, where each day, I could acquire knowledge to add to my overall perspective.”

After completing medical school, Dr. Velpuri met her husband, a software engineer, who lived in the United States. She wanted to complete her residency in family medicine and she accepted a position at San Joaquin Hospital in the Sierra Nevada foothill community of French Camp.

Upon completion of her residency in 2007, Dr. Velpuri joined Bay Valley Medical Group. “Bay Valley Medical Group is a wonderful medical group because it gives me freedom to build a well-rounded practice,” said Velpuri. “I wanted to work in an office where I could have autonomy to pursue a full scope of practice, including performing minor surgical procedures to my patients.” Dr. Velpuri enjoys family medicine because she is able to interact with all members of a family regardless of their age. “I love being able to see people grow through the different stages in their lives,” she adds, “Seeing happy and healthy families, makes my work worthwhile.”

Dr. Velpuri is board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is multilingual in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Urdu, as well as conversant in medical Spanish. She also leads cultural competence training programs. These workshops are designed for doctors and staff to enhance their ability to connect and communicate with individuals, regardless of their cultural background.

Last year, Bay Valley Medical Group initiated the Ira G. Davidoff Leadership Development Program. The program was named in honor of the late medical director of the Group. It’s purpose is to recognize an individual who has demonstrated leadership potential and provide them with an opportunity to learn more about health care management and to grow as a physician leader. Dr. Velpuri was selected as this year’s honoree. “Dr. Velpuri has exhibited significant leadership potential by her maturity, level headedness and the examples she sets for us all with her work ethic,” says Dr. Kohleriter, medical director of Bay Valley Medical Group.

In her spare time, Dr. Velpuri enjoys cooking authentic Indian meals and most importantly spending time with her husband and two daughters. “I have no time for hobbies,” says Dr. Velpuri. “I spend the majority of my free time with my children; they are my favorite pastime.”

Dr. Velpuri practices family medicine at Bay Valley Medical Group’s Pleasanton office and can be reached at 925-462-7060.
