Whooping Cough Vaccine Required for Students

California immunization law requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap. Find out more>>

Pertussis Vaccination

Pertussis (whooping cough) is a highly contagious bacterial illness spread by coughing and sneezing. The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) recommends that all patients without documentation of full immunization against pertussis be fully immunized at the earliest opportunity. This will help prevent infants from getting pertussis, which can be fatal in children less than 2 years of age.

For adults, the CDPH has recommended the following priority populations for immunization against pertussis:

  • Women of childbearing age – vaccinate preferably before pregnancy, but there are no contraindications for vaccination during or after pregnancy
  • Other close contacts of infants – childcare providers, parents, siblings, extended family, preferably before mother and baby are discharged from hospital after birth
  • Health care personnel – all health care personnel, particularly those who have direct contact with infants and pregnant women

The Tdap vaccine for adults is available at Bay Valley Medical Group. Please call our office to schedule an appointment.

Infants and children should be vaccinated according to American Academy of Pediatric recommendations. Communicate with your pediatrician’s office regarding immunizations.
