Bay Valley Medical Group Partners with University HealthCare Alliance

Bay Valley Medical Group (BVMG) has formed an exciting new partnership with University HealthCare Alliance (UHA). The affiliation of UHA and BVMG helps both partners flourish in the complex, increasingly competitive, and rapidly changing health care environment. It will strengthen BVMG’s ability to adapt to local, regional, and national forces while enhancing growth and supporting the community-based service model here in the East Bay. This affiliation preserves BVMG’s commitment to providing care to its patients, in conjunction with our local physicians and hospitals.

UHA is a non-profit medical foundation sponsored by and partnered with Stanford Hospital & Clinics. It seeks to affiliate with high quality, community- based physicians in the Bay Area. UHA’s unique structure allows for preserving a private practice environment for individual physicians and medical groups while providing a direct link to one of the world’s leading medical institutions.

Bruce Harrison, UHA’s chief administrative officer, states, “Healthcare is undergoing many changes from a regulatory perspective, making it more important than ever for doctors and hospitals to work together. Our mission is to deliver value to our patients. An affiliation between Stanford and community physicians enables us to provide coordinated preventive, chronic, acute and long-term care. And as millions of new people become eligible for health insurance in the coming years, UHA and BVMG will be ready to respond to the increased demand.”

This affiliation will not impact BVMG’s availability to take care of its patients. Individuals and families may continue to see the physicians(s) they’ve been seeing. They may continue to visit any of the four offices in Castro Valley, Danville, Hayward and Pleasanton or any of the affiliate physicians in BVMG’s network. The physician, nursing and clinical support staff is not changing. Access to community specialists and to local hospitals will not change. From a patient care perspective, everything will remain very much the same.

“BVMG doctors will continue to provide high quality, compassionate care to our patients,” said Eric Kohleriter, M.D., president and medical director for BVMG. “And, with this affiliation, we intend to grow and recruit additional physicians to help us serve the needs of our community. With UHA as our partner, we will be able to continue to be there for patients, now and into the future.”

Where patients may observe changes is in the type of management support that is provided to Bay Valley Medical Group. UHA brings new information technology and over the next year or two, Bay Valley Medical Group will have an electronic health record and offer patients more tools to communicate with the Group online. There will also be changes to the billing and accounting systems, all with a goal of improving front line operations for patients and behind-the-scenes functionality for staff.

“BVMG has been providing care to tens of thousands of East Bay families for over 57 years,” said Shelley Horwitz, CEO for BVMG. “We have a tradition of offering personalized service and being a relatively small, easily accessible medical group. By partnering with UHA, we intend to preserve our close-knit staff and connection to our patients while at the same time upgrading and expanding our facilities and administrative capabilities. This is an exciting time for our organization.”
